A lot of people do not have a clear understanding on what is self esteem. Some would say that a person who has achieved much is sure to have high self esteem levels, while others would say that self esteem is synonymous with ego. While those may be true at some angles, those views do not necessarily apply to all situations.
Every single person is made different, some may be better than others however, self esteem is not reliant on how much a person has achieved or how much he or she has yet to achieve instead, it is just about how a person thinks about his or herself. A person may not achieve much, but the positive views he has on himself can increase self esteem levels. With this, how you think about yourself is what determines your self esteem levels go higher.
You Can Develop It
While some people have naturally high levels of self esteem, those who are not that gifted with those levels can still develop it. According to what self esteem is, it is what builds up your character just like how traits would, so if you just put in enough time and effort to develop the skills and other necessary things for you to have higher self esteem, you really would have it.
If you do not have high levels of self esteem, you can be considered as shy, introverted, withdrawn, or timid. If that is so, there are a lot of things you could be missing.
The Right Time to Develop It
In order for you to know what is self esteem, you also have to know when to develop it. Practically, the earlier you develop it would be better. That is why at adolescence or early teens, it is important for parents to develop the skills and talents of children that would increase their self esteem levels later on. Although developing self esteem in children early is an advantage, anyone can have self esteem boosts at any given time.
It Can Make Or Break You
When talking about what is self esteem, you have to consider that this shapes your character; self esteem can make or break you.
People who have levels of self esteem that are too high can be considered arrogant while people who have really low levels of it can be considered as shy. The thing about self esteem is that, it is one of the more visible characteristics of a person. Being too shy or too arrogant are both unlikeable characteristics. What you need is just the right amount of self esteem.
Just the Right Amount
When asking what is self esteem, some people would also be concerned with just how much self esteem a person needs. With that, it can be answered by saying that people just need the right amount, not too much or too little. Considering this, building your self esteem does not mean that you want your levels of this to soar high rather; your goal here is just to reach the right level.
Just the right level of self esteem means that you only need the amount that would make you do things which you have to be doing confidently, since things are more efficiently done in this manner.
What to Avoid
While you know what is self esteem, it is also important to know what things can break your self esteem. If you had experience some situations wherein you are humiliated, put down, or embarrassed, you can just feel your self esteem going down. Although no one can really avoid these situations, the important part here is that you know how to handle them. These will come naturally to any person that is why learning how to handle them is very important.
It is also important that you should not be too affected with criticisms or negative views on you. You know for a fact that no one is perfect and that people will always have something to say about you. So whenever people do, with you knowing what is self esteem, just keep your chin up and learn how to handle those.
